Visit From Seamus Nolan

Visit from Hotel Ballymun Artist, Seamus Nolan.

31st March

We were delighted to welcome Seamus Nolan, a Dublin based artist to our studio here in the college. We had all heard of Seamus most famous work – the Hotel Ballymun Project and were looking forward to talking to him as we are doing a project with similar aspects. We presented some of our work to date to him which included different sleep spaces and different uses of materials

We were intrigued with his presentation on different artists who have used materials for different purposes than they were originally intended which gave us a lot of ideas. We were also delighted to hear from him about Hotel Ballymun and how it all worked as a community project and not just as an art installation. We also were interested in hearing how he came across some difficulties regarding regulations as we had experienced similar problems which we have since overcome.

We would like to thank Seamus for taking time out to come and talk to us and broadening our thinking towards this kind of project.

Concept stage

Starting with our concepts we had lots of different ideas but had narrowed them down to just 2... sense and nonsense and illusion.

Here are some of our concept boards which show the 2 different concepts

Sense & Nonsense

With Sense & Nonsense we wanted to have a fun and play element to the design (nonsense) while at the same time the sense part of it is to insure that all the elements of the design work and meet the criteria of the brief.

Illusion

For the illusion concept we combined a few different conceptual ideas that we had. We wanted to incorporate the idea of dreams and emotions in with illusions. The idea that all is not as it seems ties in with dreams and how they can be illusional.

Concept Models and Models of the building to Follow :)

Diagramming

We used bubble diagrams and relationship diagrams to help us come to our final decision as to which activities have the highest interaction with each other

The site plan, wind directions and sunpath diagrams. The suns location is shown throughout the day and through the different months of the year.

Using Relationship diagrams we figured out which activities had to be directly linked and which needed the most privacy, light, access etc.

The next move is to come up with some concepts !!

Precedents

Our Precedents wall!! We researched similar installations on sleep and some "pod" hotel rooms in china. also looked at different types of communal sleep and alternative sleeping spaces.
